Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network: Leveraging Standardization for Data-Driven Collaboration

Over the last six years, the Lake Erie Volunteer Science Network (LEVSN) has transformed from a collection of six unaffiliated volunteer water quality monitoring programs into a coordinated observing system involving more than 20 organizations. Standardization of data collection, management, visualization, analysis, and reporting protocols across LEVSN participants has enabled rapid onboarding of new groups, regional interoperability for insights at the scale of a Great Lake, and plug and play integration with state, national, and international data platforms for increased data usability and visibility.

Cleveland Water Alliance, lead facilitator of the Network, and The Commons, its data platform lead, are excited to share lessons learned on how fit for purpose data management tools can help water monitoring groups meet short and long-term program goals, enabling impact and growth at both local and regional levels.
