LEED Co, formally known as the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCo), is a Cleveland, Ohio-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing clean energy development in the Great Lakes region, with a primary focus on pioneering offshore wind projects to foster economic growth, environmental sustainability, and energy independence. Established in 2007 as a collaborative effort involving public, private, and community stakeholders, LEEDCo spearheads initiatives like the flagship Icebreaker Wind project—a six-turbine, 30-megawatt demonstration facility in Lake Erie near Cleveland—aimed at proving the viability of freshwater offshore wind while creating jobs and reducing carbon emissions. The organization conducts rigorous environmental impact assessments, including aerial surveys for birds and bats, aquatic sampling for ecological characterization, and comprehensive monitoring plans addressing risks such as habitat disruption, noise, and electromagnetic fields on wildlife and ecosystems. Through strategic partnerships with entities like LimnoTech, WEST, Inc., Vestas Wind Systems, and federal agencies, LEEDCo has produced key documents like the Final Environmental Assessment and quarterly pre-construction reports, positioning it as a trailblazer in responsible renewable energy innovation amid ongoing efforts to secure funding and regulatory approvals for broader deployment.
