Reese Johnson is a Deputy Director at the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati
(MSD) and oversees the Wastewater Engineering Division as MSD's Chief Engineer and
Hamilton County’s Sanitary Engineer. He leads a team of over 100 technical and administrative
staff and integrated consultants in the planning and delivery of MSD’s capital program, which is
investing over $1B in this region’s infrastructure over the next 10 years. Prior to his current role,
Reese served as Superintendent of MSD's Compliance Services Division for five years and as a
Principal Engineer for two years, during which he implemented MSD's award-winning
Operational Optimization Program (Smart Sewers).


Throughout his time at MSD, Reese has been a champion of innovation and collaboration, coleading
a cross divisional group of employees that put innovative ideas to work for the benefit of
MSD’s ratepayers. He recently completed a three-year term as the Chair of the Water
Environment Federation’s (WEF) Intelligent Water Technology Community, and served two
years on the Steering Committee for the joint WEF/WRF Intelligent Water Systems Challenge, a
competition that fostered utility, industry and academia partnerships to solve pressing issues in
the water space.


Prior to joining MSD, Reese worked for CH2M HILL (now Jacobs Engineering) for 13 years,
supporting both water and wastewater utilities as they integrated new technology and processes
into their organizations. During that time, he served on the Board of Trustees of Confluence, the
Water Technology Innovation Cluster of the Ohio River Valley, including two years as Board
President, during which time Confluence was recognized at both the regional and national level
for its contributions to economic development and making the Cincinnati/Dayton/Northern
Kentucky region a leader in water technology.


Reese has a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy
and a Master of Engineering degree in civil and environmental engineering from the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the
State of Ohio and the Commonwealth of Kentucky and is a certified Project Management
Professional (PMP) through the Project Management Institute.
